Résumé
Le levé cartographique des îles Futuna et Alofi a permis l'identification de trois formations volcaniques pliocènes marquant l'installation et le fonctionnement d'un arc insulaire, en relation avec la terminaison nord de la fosse des Tonga, et le passage de ce contexte orogénique à un contexte intraplaque. Des terrasses calcaires soulevées pléistocènes marquent la surrection importante de l'archipel (plus de 500 m).
Abstract
Three volcanic units hâve been recognized during the mapping of Futuna and Alofi islands. Thèse indicate 1-the existence of an immature island arc which may correspond to a Pliocène southwards subduction of the Pacific plate along the northern Tonga trench termination, 2- a stage of transitional intraplate volcanism emphasizes the end of subduction. After cessation of the volcanism, raised Pleistocene reef limestones évidence the uplift of the islands (more than 500 m).
